Daily notes, templates & capture

Good capture habits need zero friction. Fable's daily notes give every day a home, and templates stamp out consistent structure.

Templates

A template is an ordinary note kept in a folder you designate. Enable the Templates plugin, then set Template folder location in its options.

Run Insert template (from the command palette or a hotkey) and pick a template; its content is inserted at the cursor.
Insert current date and Insert current time are available as standalone commands too.

Templates substitute variables when inserted:

Variable	Becomes
`{{title}}`	The name of the current note
`{{date}}`	Today's date, using the plugin's date format
`{{time}}`	The current time, using the plugin's time format
`{{date:YYYY-MM-DD}}`	A one-off format override, using the tokens below

A small example template for meeting notes:

Anything the template engine does not recognize as a variable is left untouched. If a template's frontmatter meets a note that already has properties, the two sets are combined.

Date and time format tokens

Formats use Moment-style tokens. The most useful ones:

Token	Meaning	Example
`YYYY`	Four-digit year	2026
`MM`	Two-digit month	07
`DD`	Two-digit day	12
`ddd` / `dddd`	Weekday, short / full	Sat / Saturday
`HH`	Hour, 24-hour clock	14
`mm`	Minutes	05

The defaults are YYYY-MM-DD for dates and HH:mm for times.

Daily notes

The Daily notes plugin gives each calendar day one note, named by date. Click the calendar icon in the ribbon or run Open today's daily note: if today's note exists it opens; if not, Fable creates it, applying your daily template.

Option	What it does
Date format	The note's name, default `YYYY-MM-DD`. Slashes nest notes into subfolders, so `YYYY/MM/YYYY-MM-DD` files each month away.
New file location	The folder daily notes are created in.
Template file location	A template applied to each new daily note.

Open previous/next daily note commands step through adjacent days.
Opening an existing daily note never re-applies the template, so nothing gets overwritten.
Date-typed properties render as links to the matching daily note while the plugin is enabled.

A simple capture flow

Give your daily template an ## Inbox heading. Anything you jot in today's note under it can be linked out later with [[, and yesterday's stragglers are one Open previous daily note away.
