Hotkeys

Every command in Fable can be bound to a keyboard shortcut, and every default can be changed. A few minutes in the hotkey editor pays for itself daily.

Viewing and searching hotkeys

Open Settings → Hotkeys to see every command with its current binding. Search by command name to find what you are after, and filter to see only assigned or only unassigned commands. The command palette also shows each command's hotkey inline, which is a low-effort way to absorb them.

Remapping a hotkey

  • Find the command, select its binding control, and press the new key combination.
  • A command can have more than one binding, and most commands start with none, waiting for you to assign one.
  • If a combination is already taken, Fable warns you about the conflict.
  • A reset control restores a command's default binding.

The modifier model

Shortcuts combine one or more modifiers with a key. Fable runs on Windows today, with macOS planned, and bindings are stored platform-neutrally:

ModifierWindows / LinuxmacOS (future)
ModCtrlCmd
CtrlCtrlCtrl
AltAltOption
ShiftShiftShift

Mod is the portable modifier: a binding saved as Mod+B means Ctrl B on Windows and will mean Cmd B on a Mac, so your customizations travel with the vault.

Where custom bindings live

Custom bindings are written to .obsidian/hotkeys.json in your vault, mapping a command id to its combos. The file holds only what you changed; an empty {} means all defaults.

{
  "editor:toggle-bold": [ { "modifiers": ["Mod"], "key": "B" } ],
  "app:go-back":        [ { "modifiers": ["Alt"], "key": "ArrowLeft" } ]
}

Because hotkeys are per-vault configuration, a vault carries its shortcuts with it, including a hotkeys.json written by Obsidian.
